Youth Maine Retreat |
|
Each year we take a group of teens to rural Maine to
work with those less fortunate, building and repairing homes & trailers.
We have done roofing, siding, framing, painting, window installation,
plumbing etc. We have leveled many trailers and built several wheel
chair ramps. We have helped to build, from the bottom While in Maine, we work with a group called Rural Community Action Ministry. An ecumenical clergy group and fifteen area churches started this organization in 1970. The RCAM is a non-profit, social service agency designed to meet economic and other needs of people living in the area rural towns. The group has been involved since its beginnings in upgrading housing in the surrounding communities. This year the trip is July 12th through July 19th. You must have completed at least your Junior year in High School by the end of June. Those teens who have completed their senior year get first preference for the first week of open registration. This year we have many who have expressed an interest in going. It is important to get registrations in ASAP and PLEASE only register if you know 100% that you are going. This is a very special trip. Not only do we serve those less fortunate, but the teens and adults who make this trip, return with a renewed understanding of how blessed we all are, not only financially but in our families and in our community. We often have people ask, why do you go to Maine, why not just serve those here. It is important to understand that immersing yourself totally in this service ministry is critical. You can't come home at night to the comfort of your home and bed. You can't go out with your friends at night. We sleep on the floor, the teens and adults help prepare meals and clean up after. The teens do their own laundry. It is about sacrificing creature comforts and learning to live in community with people you may not have known. It is a great preparation for college and life.
