Reading Schedule and Reflection Questions

The Gentile Mission

Week February 14, 2010 (6th Sunday of Ordinary Time)

Read: Acts 15: 1 – 35

Reflect: This section of Acts describes the Council of Jerusalem, the first of many councils of the church. Here the early church struggled with the major question of how the Jewish and Gentile Christians could all follow Christ together in practice. Although the council offered its teaching it took time in the early communities to integrate that teaching. More recently, the Second Vatican Council offered important teachings for the faithful that also have been integrated in our worldwide church. As I prepare for Lent, how do I live out the teachings of the Second Vatican Council? How have they changed how I understand my discipleship? What aspects of the council’s teaching have I not yet integrated into my faith life? How can I better share the teachings of the Catholic Church with others in my life?

Did anything else stand out for me in this section of Acts?

Act it Out! How do my reflections today inform how I will live out my discipleship in the world this week?

Could I…
…read and discuss the documents of the Second Vatican Council that I find most challenging? Ask my pastoral leader about them?
…connect the teachings of the Catholic Church with a new piece of legislation?
…learn about an aspect of a different faith and see how it relates to the teaching of the Catholic Church?

How else could I act it out?

Week February 7, 2010 (5th Sunday of Ordinary Time)

Read: Acts 13: 44 – 14: 28

Reflect: Paul and Barnabas encounter some problems in Lystra when the people misunderstand the healing of a crippled man as meaning that Paul and Barnabas are the Greek gods Hermes and Zeus. The cultural expectations of the community made it difficult for them to understand Paul and Barnabas’ message, even after they tried to make it clear that they are human beings, not gods. Try as they might the influence of the people’s culture created a barrier to their preaching, although some did hear and believe. Are there aspects of my culture that make sharing the Good News more difficult? How does that change my call to discipleship and my ability to preach the Good News?

Did anything else stand out for me in this section of Acts?

Act it Out! How do my reflections today inform how I will live out my discipleship in the world this week?

Could I…
…be sure to connect my actions with my faith when I offer help or volunteer in my community?
…use new forms of media to try and share the Good News in new ways?
…be a good example of sportsmanship on my school team and connect my attitude with my understanding of Jesus?

How else could I act it out?

Are you looking for a way to begin deepening your relationship with God?
Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Read the Scripture Readings of the day every morning and/or evening.  Ask yourself, what do I hear?  How am I challenged?  How am I comforted?

  2. Spend time in prayer every day.  Start with a short time—1-5 minutes, and increase the time you spend over a month.

  3. Participate in Sunday Eucharist every week. It is the place where we meet Jesus in a very special way.

  4. Before every meal, thank Jesus for the gift of bread you will share.

  5. Make it a habit to greet the day with an affirmation of Jesus’ presence.

  6. End your day with a short examination of how you met Jesus this day.

  7. Visit a website that offers some meditation or opportunities to reflect on your relationship with Jesus

  8. Read a spiritual book.

  9. Look for moments in your day when you need Jesus, or you sense Jesus’ presence.  Honor those moments with attentiveness.

  10. Reflect on the Eucharistic Prayer we hear at mass.  There are several to choose from.  Take home the Sunday missal and reflect on the words that bring us to a renewed relationship with Jesus through Eucharist.
