Lent is here; yes, it begins this week with Ash Wednesday. I am inviting you to LIVE LIFE INTENTIONALLY and MAKE VISIBLE GOD’S WORKS!
In his encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si’, Pope Francis asks us to live more like our grandparents in cutting down on waste. How many remember when the only plastic storage bags were rinsed-out bread bags and sandwiches were wrapped in folded wax paper? Few families had more than one car, relying on school buses, carpools and public transportation to accommodate multiple needs in a family. None of that seemed inconvenient because it was simply the of way life. An unfortunate exchange for convenience is a lack of awareness of how everyday choices have a cumulative cost to the health of our planet and all who live on it.
Lent is a good time to develop practices that help us live intentionally in our world today. What keeps you from living fully as the child of God you are? Electronics? Fast from your most addictive practice during Lent. Give your full attention to anyone in your presence. Possessions? Fast from shopping, purchase only necessities this Lent and chose simpler ones that are fair trade and/or local whenever possible. Food? Resolve to make healthy, more plant-based choices that have less impact on the planet. Entertainment? In our fast-paced world, many have become reliant on a constant stream of entertainment. Try to minimize.
If you don’t already have a prayer habit, try spending time each day just being present to God—5 minutes the first week, 10 the second, 15 the third…. Plastic? It’s ubiquitous and an increasing threat to the world’s health. Develop the reusable bag habit, avoid plastic produce bags, purchase items with the least amount of packaging and supply your kitchen with products that eliminate the need for single use plastics.
Choose one practice, do it well…..LIVE LIFE INTENTIONALLY and MAKE VISIBLE GOD’S WORKS!
In peace and courage,
