Dear Friends,

Tell me what is one of Transfiguration’s Gems (ministries) hidden in Plain Sight?  And the answer is The Empty Nesters!

The Empty Nesters has been a parish based ministry for over 27 years, it is self-run by the members and it is open to anyone who is an empty nester. What is the definition of an empty nester?   A parent or parents whose children have grown and moved away from home.

I refer to the Empty Nesters as a Hidden Gem in Plain Sight because they do lots of activities, but never draw attention to themselves.  They have monthly luncheons, a Christmas party, an annual steak roast, regular euchre gatherings and the list goes on.  In the past, they have had many other activities, including day trips to various places but for a variety of reasons, some activities have been put on the back burner.

Recently the question was posed to the members if they should close up shop and go out of existence.  The present leadership surveyed the membership asking the question about the future of the Empty Nesters.  An overwhelming 63% of the membership took time to respond giving thoughts and ideas.  A 63% return rate is outstanding by any standard when it comes to response rates.

Overwhelming the response was to have the group continue.  The responses spoke loud and clear that the existing membership is happy.

What was evident is that the group needs new members who are willing to assist the present leadership, with an openness to continue the old and perhaps introduce new ideas.  In general, the present membership is between 55 to mid-70, but those ages certainly can vary, at present the membership tends to be at the upper end.  Empty Nesters know what is important in their lives and the kind of activities that interest them.

Those who responded to the survey did say that dues should continue in order for people to feel a sense of commitment.   Thus, annual dues are $10 per person to subsidize some events and possibly help a local charity.  To those of you who would like to continue, dues for 2020 are now due.  Please write a check payable to:  Church of the Transfiguration with a reference to "Empty Nesters Dues" on memo line and send to  Connie Tripp, 6 Dunbridge Hts., Fairport, NY 14450

It is very apparent that the friendships fosters in each other are very important in the lives of many people and they want to stay together.

The next Empty Nesters gathering is a lady’s luncheon on Thursday, November 21, at 12:30 PM at Branca’s in Bushnell’s Basin.   We will order lunch off the menu and everyone will have separate checks.  Guests are most welcome.  Mary Ann Ciulla is hosting this event.  RSVP – by Tuesday, November 19 at (4133740) or email her ([email protected]) for reservations.

Finally, I extend my thanks to the present leadership for their willingness to serve our Parish community, stay strong knowing your talents are appreciated!

Let us continue to pray for and take action to bring about peace in our world!

In peace and courage,
