Dear Friends,

This past Sunday afternoon my brother Bob invited me to dinner at the family cottage.  Bob and his wife, Jan, now own the cottage; we refer to it as the family cottage taking into consideration it has been in the family since 1951.  (A side note about the cottage, it was built around 1875, as the first cottage on the west side of Silver Lake; we believe the Bausch family are the third owners.  For the first 75 years of it existence the owners had no children, but in the last 70 years that changed with my 4 brothers and me, 19 grandchildren, 30+ great-grandchildren and many great-greatgrandchildren).  After watching the Bills lose, we adjourned to the dinner table on the enclosed front porch.  Around the table were Bob and Jan, their son Matt, my brother Richard and his wife Nancy, my friend Mike and myself.  We had a delightful conversation about days gone by and I think it was the first time my two brothers and I had the opportunity to chat since our brother Don died on July 5.

I mentioned all this because I believe it so important to enjoy moments like sitting around the table “to just chat”.  These moments in life are rare for many people and families, which makes these occasions so precious.  We did not talk about any really heavy stuff, it was just about what is happening in life as life goes on.

Through my years in pastoral ministry, I have been honored to hear some wonderful stories from families and, unfortunately, I have stories that sadden my heart.  Fortunately, I have been able to assist those families who are broken for some reason, but I am blessed to have a wealth of resources to refer families who are experiencing difficult times. So please know my ears and heart are always open to hear the happy stories and my ears and heart are doubly open to those who need assistance with a family problem.

Voting Day will soon be upon us and October 12 is the last day to register to vote in this November’s elections. Voter registration forms are available at the Board of Elections, 39 W. Main St, Rochester. Find information and a link to the English and Spanish forms at https:// www2.monroecounty.gov/elections-registration.php.

"We need to participate for the common good. Sometimes we hear: a good Catholic is not interested in politics. This is not true: good Catholics immerse themselves in politics by offering the best of themselves so that the leader can govern." - Pope Francis, 9/16/13

On the lighter side…. A minister waited in line to have his car filled with gas just before a long holiday weekend.  The attendant worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of him. Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump.  "Reverend," said the young man, "I'm so sorry about the delay. It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip."  The minister chuckled, "I know what you mean. It's the same in my business."

Let us continue to pray and sacrifice for peace in our world!

In peace and courage,
