The Seven Themes of Catholic Social Teachings of our Church are a dominate factor in our Roman Catholic tradition. They are at the very core of our faith, thus our daily ministry as Baptized people needs to reflect the Social Teachings. Some believe the Catholic Social Teachings are just a liberal interpretation of the Gospel, not true! These Teachings are meant to help us reflect our love for the rich treasure of wisdom and about building a just society, living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society. I invite you to take time to reflect of the banners across the back wall of our worship space, they are a wonderful introduction to the seven themes. After you have done that, I encourage you to do a web search of the Seven Themes of Catholic Social Teachings. I guarantee you will find a number of sites, use any of them, but a call your particular attention to one based in the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops.
Care of God’s Creation is one the seven teachings. Today I call your attention to Pope Francis’ World Day of Prayer for Creation Care. "Now is the time to abandon our dependence on fossil fuels and move, quickly and decisively, toward forms of clean energy...We have caused a climate emergency that gravely threatens nature and life itself, including our own…
We have forgotten who we are: creatures made in the image of God, called to dwell as brothers and sisters in a common home. Now is the time to rediscover our vocation as children of God, brothers and sisters, and stewards of creation. Now is the time to repent, to be converted. Let us choose life. Let us say 'no' to consumerist greed and to the illusion of omnipotence, for these are the ways of death...
May God, the lover of life, grant us the courage to do good without waiting for someone else to begin or until it is too late."
As we begin to move into the fall season, I encourage all of us to take time and drive down through the Finger Lakes to absorb the beauty of the area. Stop and have a glass of wine while gazing at the full colors of the trees (in a few short weeks). Yes, it is one of the gifts our Creator showers upon us.
Let us continue to pray for and take action to bring about peace in our world!
In peace and courage,
